Summer is Here!

It has been quite a long time since I updated this blog, so my apologies as this will likely turn into a long post. 🙂 Things were pretty casual and slow going over the last few months, but now that it is finally getting warmer out, we are able to take the pups out to do some of our favorite outdoor activities!
Henry is almost at his 9 month ampu-versary (June 15th) and his 7 month adopt-aversary (June 19th)! A few months ago we took him to a new vet, who kindly informed us that whoever did the amputation did it completely wrong. They did not take off the entire shoulder, and only amputated from the humerus down so he is left with a bit of a nub that he often lands on and injures because there’s nothing there besides skin to protect that sharp bone. We also found out that it is likely he is missing a portion of his remaining front elbow, so between the amputation, the elbow injury, and the half missing tail, we are fairly certain the poor guy was hit but a car, not caught in a trap like the rescue believed. Our vet told us that if he injures the nub often, we can certainly choose to have the remaining shoulder removed. Obviously none of us want to make him go through that again, but if it helps in the long run, it may be necessary. He is a young guy after all. He has been going to the chiropractor pretty regularly (once every 6 weeks) and has been doing great with it. He no longer limps in his rear legs, and is no longer ‘hopping’ with both back legs at once. Instead he is hopping only with his front leg and walking normally (one foot at a time) with the rear legs, which makes me so happy to see.

Patiently waiting for his adjustment!

We ended up getting insurance for him and our other golden retriever through Embrace, and let me tell you, they are awesome! I was so worried that they wouldn’t cover anything for Henry due to his leg amputation, but it turns out the only pre-existing condition he had was the actual amputation – so complications from the surgery were the only pre-existing condition not covered. We also have their Wellness Plan, so we get reimbursed for all of Henry’s chiropractor visits, joint supplements, vitamins, etc.

Now, on to the fun stuff! We got our other golden retriever, Bailey, when she was a puppy, so she’s pretty well versed in going everywhere with us – canoeing, boating, swimming, hiking, festivals and other events, etc. When we got Henry we noticed that he is a bit of an anxious pup – he whines a lot – so we were worried he wouldn’t do well going to do these things with us. The first warm spring day we had open we gave Henry a trial run on the boat and he absolutely LOVED it!

First time on the boat

Some other fun things we have been up to:

Swimming and hiking at our nearby State Park!

Henry’s first time swimming with 3! (And possibly first time swimming altogether)
He did great, but I’m thinking he will prefer lounging on the boat in the future. 🙂
Taking a break on the hike!

Sleepy after a long day.

Many “Firsts” Accomplished This Weekend

What a busy week it’s been! Henry has been progressing greatly since he came home 3 weeks ago!  Our latest walk was just over 1.5 miles, and Henry was not ready to quit when we got back to the driveway.  He was housetrained when we got him, but beyond that, the poor guy didn’t know much else.  He now knows sit, stay (although he isn’t a big fan of it!), lay down, and is starting to figure out the whole walking on a leash thing.  He’s got quite a big personality, and we all love him so much already!

Henry & Bailey

Saturday morning, a canine rehabilitation specialist (Tiffany) came out to our house to look at Henry.  He had an awful lot of tightness in the amputated limb. It was very tight to his chest, and also tight in the shoulder. She showed us different massages and ways to move the limb to ease the tightness and make it a bit more comfortable for him. Over the past few weeks, we had noticed that his right rear leg (kitty corner from his amputated limb) turns in a bit when he walks, and it is more pronounced when he is tired.  We discussed this with Tiffany, and she noted that the turning in was actually a minor limp, and that the leg was tight on the hip and inner and outer thigh. Tiffany thought that this needed further investigation from our vet and that it may be due to a minor tear or fracture in that leg, which is certainly possible as we don’t know exactly what happened to him.  With all of the other injuries he has, we assume he was hit by a vehicle.  We will be visiting the vet sometime soon to figure out what exactly is going on with that rear leg!

What’s that silly kitty doing??

After spending time with the rehab specialist, getting massaged, and doing some exercises on the FitPaws pods and exercise peanut, Henry, Bailey, and fur-cousin Nessie went to get a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus at our local humane society! I don’t have the photo back just yet, but will post it as soon as I get it!

Testing out his new bed.

We got about 7 inches of snowfall Saturday afternoon and overnight, so when we woke up Sunday morning, Henry got to experience his first true snowfall. Bailey certainly showed him how to enjoy it!!

Sunday evening, we went over to my parents’ house to watch the Packer game.  Henry got to hang out with Bailey, Nessie, and my parents’ cocker spaniels: Marley and Phoebe.  Henry has become a die-hard Packer fan and wore his new Packer shirt for the first time. It must be a lucky shirt, because we got to watch a great win, which was much needed this season!

Welcome!

Hello! I guess I should start off this blog by introducing myself, my family, and how the newest addition to our family, and who this blog centers around, Henry, came into our life! My name is Renee, and my husband, Kevin and I have 3 fur-babies: a 5 year old kitty named Aldo (Leopold!), a 3 year old golden retriever named Bailey, and our newest member: ~2 year old Henry! My husband and I got Aldo from a local humane society when he was about 10 months old, and then got Bailey 3 years ago when she was about 8 weeks old. We are very outdoorsy people, and love to hike, camp, swim, canoe, etc. We have always taken Bailey with us on our adventures, and rarely leave her at home.

With that face, I bet you’d have a hard time leaving her at home too! 😊 For about a year and a half, Kevin and I had debated whether or not to get a fur-sibling for Bailey. We would go through the pros: another dog!, playmates, cuddle buddies, best friends, etc! and the cons: it’s a lot harder to travel with 2 dogs, how can we accommodate another dog?, do we have the financial means?, etc. Needless to say, we eventually decided to just go for it – if another dog was meant to be in our family, we will find one another.

We had some prerequisites: we wanted a dog slightly smaller than our Bailey (60 lbs), but we love her personality so much, we wanted to find another golden retriever or golden mix. Let me tell you, in our neck of the woods, rescue golden/golden mixes are hard to find, and go fast!

After months of contacting and searching rescues, I found an adorable year and a half old Border Collie mix named Selena. We filled out an application for Selena so we could get a chance to meet her, and a few days later, Selena’s foster mom called to discuss Selena and see if we were still interested in meeting her. We learned that Selena is a distemper survivor, and with the cold Wisconsin winter weather coming, she was starting to have a hard time breathing as the distemper damaged her lungs. We were still interested in meeting Selena, and after figuring out a meeting date and time, Selena’s foster mom proceeded to tell me about another dog she was fostering that had just become available for adoption that day: a 38 lb golden retriever mix named Hunter.

Hunter was a recent amputee (mid September of this year). He was taken in from a high-kill shelter in Texas. Half of his tail was missing, one of his front legs had a large wound open to the bone, and his other front leg was broken. Someone had attempted to pin the broken leg, and it healed with the bone side by side. There was a bad infection, and the bone and nerves were dying. A rescuer down in Texas took Hunter immediately and contacted the owner of a rescue here in Wisconsin (Selena’s foster mom!). In only 4 hours, the rescue raised the necessary funds to have Hunter’s leg amputated, his other wounds tended to, his teeth cleaned, and get him neutered. After his amputation, Hunter stayed in Texas for 2 weeks. He then travelled to Wisconsin and lived with a family for about a month.  Unfortunately, his first home did not work out and Hunter ended up going back to the rescue.  When his foster mom first got him, he had a hard time just walking. She had Selena, a 30 lb border collie mix, and 2 larger 80 lb lab mixes. After 2 weeks of living with his foster mom, he could walk and was beginning to wrestle and play tug-of-war with the big dogs.

Let me tell you, after seeing photos of Hunter and hearing his story, we fell in love (and we hadn’t even met him yet!). However, we weren’t so sure how a tripawd would fit into our active lifestyle. Either way, we knew we wanted to meet both him and Selena, so one evening after work we packed up Bailey and drove about an hour and a half to meet them both. We took one look at Hunter and knew he was the one. It seemed as though he knew we were the family for him too, because he immediately ran over and put his head in my lap. Bailey was unsure of him at first (only dog – spoiled dog syndrome!), but he instantly wanted to play with her and followed her everywhere.

That night, I began to do some research on 3 legged dogs. Lo and behold, I found tripawds.com! The wonderful resources on this site helped firm up our decision that Hunter was the right dog for us.

A few days later, Hunter (now Henry) came home to us. We kept Hunter as his middle name as he knows it and will come to it. It’s been 2 weeks so far and he is settling in nicely. He is getting up and down the stairs and has been going for 1 mile walks (he wants to do more but we have been limiting him!). Bailey and Henry have become good friends and even the kitty adores him! This blog will be dedicated to our adventures with Henry and Bailey and his progress on getting healthy, strong and in shape!

Thanks for visiting!
